high seas

I spent the night in Bimini out of the wind and waves. I ran into Tim, a French couple and a Canadian couple who were anchored next to me in Miami. They left two days before me in flat calm.
I set sail at about 7:00 am, back in the wind and waves, the other boats are waiting this frontal passage out; wish I could too.
I was pretty pooped by 9:00 pm and fatigue leads to poor judgment so I dropped the hook on the banks near Russell light. Of course there is no protection on the banks and it was very ruff on deck but when I went below it was quite and warm. I took a hot shower, grilled a piece of salmon and had a salad while watching an HBO movie on sat tv.
I'm now 10 miles east of Nassau in very big seas and 25 kts of wind but this trip is almost over and it is Friday night in the big city for this solo sailor.

under way mid gulf stream

I sailed from Miami at about 5:00 PM today into the teeth of a cold front passage. Sometimes I have little choice since as is the case this time I made this appointment for a charter many weeks ago. Well anyway, the wind is out of the north at about 20-25 kts and the stream flows north in opposition to it so the result is seas between 8 and 10' with an occasional 12 footer, how nice.
The stars are out in a fine clear way and it is warm for a cold front, so what's not to like? Not much traffic out here tonight, there has only been four ships so far. I can just see a low loom of light on the horizon which should be Bimini or I have made a big navigational error.
I will make landfall around Midnight, get some sleep and sail for Nassau in the morning
All for now,
Mark.

Exuma islands

Capt. Mark
Happy New Year to all, I have just come back to George Town Exuma where I left Stray Cat while I flew to California to visit with my children for the holidays.
I had a wonderful time with my family getting caught-up with everyone and seeing for the first time my great granddaughter who is so pretty and sweet and the latest model in granddaughters Ocean who is just six months old. I also met for the first time two wonderful young men who are married to my granddaughters.
That shore side visit was about as long a period on land that I can remember in fifteen years. The distraction of the beautiful Exumas and the reality of sailing back to Florida for the upcoming charter season looming there help to soften the void of leaving. Now it's back to work to save up for the next visit.
